Most UK fund-raising is currently based in Cornwall. In Tanzania, all volunteer activity is based at Emau Hill Forest Camp, approximately 6km from Amani; the nearest international airport is in Dar-es-Salaam, with internal flights and buses to Tanga.
There is limited solar power, water piped from the river and some collected rainwater. All accommodation is in a tented banda, sharing with others as appropriate. All meals and social life are centred in the Dining Banda, shared with Tukae staff, other volunteers and visitors.
The diet is that of a healthy near-vegetarian: locally grown fruit and vegetables, together with the staples of bread, rice, potatoes and ugali (corn meal). Meat is more difficult to obtain, so is an occasional treat. Water is made safe to drink through exposure to sunshine.
It is not possible to answer this question with any certainty! We feel that in Emau Hill Forest camp and Amani, life is very safe, and there is good mobile phone coverage.
All travellers are recommended to seek advice from the Foreign Office and travel agents, and to consult established guide books, the web and others who have visited.
We ask volunteers to pay for all travel expenses, including extra trips, together with bed and board (currently about £500/month). The funds raised in this way help provide local employment as well as covering staff costs and overheads.
