The weather was amazing - for a day on the beach - not so amazing for a 10.5km run, no wind and temperatures of over 100F!
Along with over 2100 other runners, including 400 other foreigners, I had signed myself up for the Bangkok Temple Run on March 19th this year. I hadn't done anything more strenuous than the odd stretch and already I was sweating, the weather really was intense!
After a traditional Thai opening ceremony we set off on one of what is thought to be the most picturesque marathon courses in the world, leading past Buddhist Temples, through banana and coconut plantations, past rice paddies and through typical Thai villages. Cheered all the way along the course by Thai cultural bands and numerous young children with drums and flags!
After nightfall torches and globe lights were placed along the course for any late finishers which, combined with the sound of crickets and traditional Thai music, created a mystic atmosphere.
The atmosphere was amazing - everyone was so friendly and supportive - though most of the limited conversation with the locals was concentrated on the very hot weather!
I'm delighted to discover on checking my time that I finished in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 14 seconds, putting me in 19th place - the winning time in my category was achieved by a Thai lady who finished in a time of 45 minutes and 30 seconds.
The total amount raised through my website was £827.13 - thank you so much to everyone who sponsored me - it really does mean the world to me and only encourages me to carry on running - so keep your eyes peeled for news of my next event!
If you haven't had the chance to sponsor me you can still do so on my web page www.justgiving.co.uk/katietukae or alternatively send a cheque payable to Tukae at 22 Hilgrove Road, Newquay, Cornwall TR7 2QZ. |
